Description
The Progressive Pride flag, was designed by Daniel Quasar in 2018, expands on the traditional Rainbow flag by incorporating a chevron of colors to represent marginalized LGBTQ+ communities, including people of color and Transgender individuals. It aims to be more inclusive and emphasize ongoing progress within the LGBTQ+ community.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
The Rainbow Flag
The original rainbow flag, designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, featured eight colors, later simplified to six. Each color had a symbolic meaning, such as red for life and green for nature.
Philadelphia Pride Flags
In 2017, Philadelphia added black and brown stripes to the Rainbow flag to specifically represent LGBTQ+ people of color.
Transgender Pride Flags
Designed by Monica Helms in 1999, this flag uses light blue, pink, and white to represent transgender individuals.
Progress Flags (2018):
Daniel Quasar combined elements from both the Philadelphia and Transgender Pride flags with the original Rainbow flag.
- He added a chevron (arrow shape) to the left side of the flag, with black, brown, light blue, pink, and white stripes, representing inclusivity for transgender people and people of color.
- The black stripe also acknowledges those lost to AIDS.
Significance:
The Progress Pride flags are a powerful symbol of inclusivity and ongoing progress within the LGBTQ+ community, highlighting the importance of representing diverse identities and experiences.
